What is Urusei Yatsura?

Urusei Yatsura is a manga created by Rumiko Takahashi, published between 1978 and 1987 in Weekly Shōnen Sunday. The story follows Ataru Moroboshi, an unlucky high schooler randomly chosen to face the alien Lum in a game of tag to decide Earth's fate. His victory is misunderstood as a marriage proposal, and Lum moves in with him, permanently upending his everyday life.

Around this unlikely duo revolves a colorful cast of characters, from Tomobiki High to countless alien peoples, blending romantic comedy, science fiction and Japanese folklore. The original manga, spanning 34 volumes, was a huge success and led to a first animated adaptation as early as 1981, followed by a 2022 remake.
